Aaron Aumick signed Mike Rowe’s S.W.E.A.T. Pledge and gained a scholarship to complete his Alfred State education to become a carpenter like his father.
Just over two years after work first began on House 54, the newest home constructed by Alfred State students for the Wellsville community is now completed and the new owners now call it home.
The intended partnership between the two schools would involve Alfred State students constructing the majority of the house, Finley said, while AU students implement the engineering design aspects.
As he looked through the brochures he was holding, Anthony Harvey liked what he was seeing: information about a college of technology that offered more than 70 hands-on majors and paths to a brighter future.
"The average age in the trade right now is 53 years. This indicates a workforce that is nearing retirement and shows a large opportunity for youth to get involved,” says Stephen Richard, assistant professor, Building Trades, at Alfred State.
For the seventh year in a row, some Alfred State senior building trades: building construction students are heading south to put their skills to work helping those in need.
Trevor Huntley, masonry, Conklin, earned a bronze medal in the masonry category for placing third against competitors from across the country. Andrea Koston, culinary arts: baking, production and management, Rochester, also earned a top 10 national finish, coming in fifth place in the commercial baking category.
“This was an excellent opportunity for Alfred State and Alfred University students to display their talents and abilities on a national scale,” Richardson said. “They were also able to receive a valuable hands-on learning experience unlike any other, which will undoubtedly benefit them in their careers once they graduate.”
More than 25 Alfred State and Alfred University students headed to California Saturday, Sept. 26, to compete in the 2015 US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.
Taking part in the Semester in the South this year are Brock Delgato, of Clarence; Kyle Parish, of Buffalo; James Friedeborn, of Ithaca; Jake Baran, of Clarence; Brian Mitchell, of Derby; Kevin Rogers, of Frewsburg; Kayla Miller, of Bronx; and Cody Marvin, of Bath.
