The Alfred State Archery team competed valiantly versus some of the top teams in the USA Archery Collegiate Outdoor East Region Championship in Harrisonburg, VA. The Pioneers hauled in seven awards and made their presence felt across the compound bow archery disciplines.
Brandon Stanton (Union Springs, NY) shot a qualification score that landed him the #1 seed in the men’s compound elimination bracket. He held off all challengers to secure the gold medal in the men’s compound division.
Brianna Fagan (Spencerport, NY) earned the second seed for women’s fixed pins after a strong performance in qualifications. She advanced all the way to the gold medal match and prevailed against the #1 seed from James Madison to secure gold.
Adam Winter (Clifton Park, NY) finished the qualification round as the 12th seed in men’s fixed pins. He then made a run through the elimination matches all the way to the finals where he earned a silver medal.
Stanton and Winter were both named All-East based on their cumulative scores from both Indoor Nationals and this Regional tournament.
In the mixed team rounds, Winter & Brianna Fagan teamed up and sailed to yet another gold medal.
First-time competitor Mackenzie Dupra (Ft. Covington, NY) had an impressive debut with the team. She made a run of her own in the elimination rounds and secured the bronze medal in women’s fixed pins.
Coach Greg Sammons was ecstatic with the medal haul. “The team has focused sharply on performance under pressure this year and that showed up in the nerve-wracking elimination matches. Our archers rose to the occasion when it mattered most.”
All-East archers Stanton and Winter will now compete on the national stage at the USA Archery Collegiate Outdoor Target Nationals being hosted at Michigan State University on May 16-18.
