Being the first is exciting, thrilling, and inspiring, but it can also be scary and overwhelming.
We’re here to help, and we want you to succeed.
Home-Schooled Students
Alfred State admits as matriculated students only persons who have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent. Because of this requirement, Alfred State has established a specific admission policy with respect to home-schooled students. The purpose of the policy is to ensure that home-schooled students are treated fairly yet in accordance with the requirements set forth by the college. The policy below deals exclusively with the criteria for eligibility to be considered as an applicant for admission. Once eligibility for consideration is established, the applicant must also meet both campus and curriculum-specific admissions requirements.
Applicants 16 years of age or over (i.e., beyond the age of required school attendance)
These home-schooled students will be eligible for further consideration as an applicant to matriculated status if they can provide one of the following:
- a passing score on the general comprehensive examination for the state high school equivalency diploma (TASC/GED) and the diploma itself if the student is eligible to receive one.
- a statement (form available from the Admissions Office) from the superintendent of the school district in which the student resides, attesting to the student’s completion of a program of home instruction that is substantially equivalent to a four-year high school program meeting the requirements of Section 100.10 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. (Please note that this option cannot be used if the student completed an online high school program of instruction, unless the online high school curriculum was used solely to support the IHIP - Individualized Home Instruction Plan.)
- official verification of successful completion (a grade of C or better) of 24 college credit hours in the following distribution: 6 credits in English language arts, 3 credits in natural science, 3 credits in humanities, 3 credits in mathematics, 3 credits in social science, and 6 credits in approved general education courses.(Please note that students admitted through this option are not eligible for federal financial aid unless the TASC/GED diploma has been earned.)
- official verification of having earned a degree from an accredited college or university.
- evidence of having passed with a grade of 65 or better the following five New York State regents exams—English language arts, mathematics, US history, a science, and global history. (Please note that students admitted through this option are not eligible for state or federal financial aid.)
Applicants under 16 years of age (the age of required school attendance)
These home-schooled students will be eligible for consideration as applicants for admission to a matriculated status only if the student can provide a statement (form available from the Admissions Office) from the superintendent of the school district in which the student resides, attesting to the student’s completion of a program of home instruction that is substantially equivalent to a four-year high school program meeting the requirements of Section 100.10 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. (Please note that this option cannot be used if the student completed an online high school program of instruction.)
Returning Students
Students who have not yet graduated from the college and wish to apply for readmission must complete a readmission application form (pdf). The completed application, along with official transcripts from any colleges attended since enrollment at Alfred State, must be forwarded to the Admissions Office. The readmission application may also be done online.
Applicants who are or will be graduates of the college and wish to apply to return must complete the SUNY Application or the Common Application online for a new program of study. The new program must be significantly different from the program from which the student graduated. Please contact the Admissions Office for further information on this requirement.
Adult Students
Adult students have graduated from high school (or received your TASC/GED) but have not enrolled in college-level coursework following graduation.

Alfred State has been designated a silver-level military-friendly school by Victory Media. With enhancements to the Post 9/11 GI Bill®, such as monthly housing allowance and a books and supplies stipend, veterans will find college expenses more affordable. At Alfred State, we offer a veterans’ lounge and exemptions on parking fees for student veterans.
The Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 requires educational institutions to make certain disclosures to students using federal military and/or VA educational benefits. To view and print a copy of an estimated personalized cost of attendance you can visit the SUNY Net Price Cost Calculator and select Alfred State from the dropdown. Additional financial information can be found at the NCES College Navigatorsite.
The SUNY Financial Aid Plan (FAP) will provide a more in-depth analysis and accurate picture of student cost once the student has filed their FAFSA, completed a SUNY application, and has been accepted by a campus.

Student with Disabilities
Alfred State is firmly committed to providing an equal opportunity for a college education to all qualified students. The philosophy of the Office of Accessibility Services reflects the interpretation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 in terms of providing reasonable and individualized accommodations. We welcome students with disabilities into our campus community and our programs. In this spirit, we are committed to providing reasonable opportunities to qualified students to participate in campus programs and activities. We recognize that the needs for each person with a disability are unique; therefore, services and/or accommodations are provided on an individualized basis. Students with disabilities are encouraged to participate in all aspects of campus life. Self-identification is essential and self-advocacy is encouraged.
Students who will be requesting support services must identify themselves to the Office of Student Accessibilities Service. To verify eligibility, documentation must be provided that clearly indicates the presence of a disability that limits a major life activity, the functional impact of the disability on the pursuit of post-secondary education, and justification of the need for accommodations. A counselor will determine eligibility for services based on the quality of the submitted documentation.
Students eligible for services/accommodations must meet with a disability counselor each semester. Student needs will be determined, put in letter form by a counselor, and delivered, by the student, to respective faculty.
If students fail to self-identify and/or provide adequate documentation of a disability, they will be unable to access services/accommodations. Early identification is encouraged.
If you wish to submit documentation to the Office of Accessibility Services, please feel free to use our Student Document Uploader tool.
