Agricultural Business

Madeline Keyes grew up on a horse farm but wanted to explore different avenues of agriculture. She found the mix of opportunities and education at Alfred State.

A dual agricultural business and business administration major, Madeline loves her professors. “We are always learning something. Our professors take us out of our comfort zones and that helps us learn more.”

“I knew I wanted to be in the agriculture industry. I had to broaden my knowledge to be successful because I did not want to be one-sided. I wanted to be able to walk on a farm and feel comfortable with my knowledge.”

“The program is unique because it is an organic dairy with a lot of livestock. We are around the animals, and we learn hands-on.”

Madeline knows the opportunities outside the classroom have enhanced her learning experiences. “The showmanship competition was rewarding. I picked out a heifer from the herd and worked with her for three months. I learned so much.”
Madeline also achieved success on the western equestrian team. She qualified, competed, and finished in the top ten at the IHSA National Championships.

Inspired by her experiences at Alfred State, Madeline plans to further her education so she can teach the next generation of agriculture students.

“I knew I wanted to be in the agriculture industry. I had to broaden my knowledge to be successful because I did not want to be one-sided. I wanted to be able to walk on a farm and feel comfortable with my knowledge.”
